TMES is a Montessori/Suzuki Violin charter school. Every child who attends TMES is not only given a Montessori based education, but also a strong curriculum in Suzuki Music, Visual Art and General Music. The Montessori Method and the Suzuki philosophy work together to give each child a world class education. We are proud to offer all of our student's weekly lessons in Suzuki Strings and Orchestra, Visual Art and General Music.

Bio:
Ms. Alissa is in her 5th year as the Suzuki Program Director at The Montessori Elementary School. She also maintains a large private studio in Albuquerque with students of all ages in violin, viola and beginning cello. Her students are in all levels of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony program and past students have gone on to conservatory level work. She also has done city-wide festival judging and coaching for APS. She has completed both levels of Suzuki in the Schools teacher training from the Suzuki Association of the Americas under Laurie Scott. This training included a cello and bass intensive. Ms. Alissa began teaching violin with the Suzuki method in 1997 in Flagstaff, AZ where she received her BA in Music from Northern Arizona University. This degree included Suzuki training, violin/viola emphasis, from Louise Scott and Karen Halberg. Ms. Alissa was a founding teacher for a Northern Arizona satellite teaching program working in rural communities and public schools. Moving back to Las Vegas, she again started an outreach program, this time for the 21st century grant, targeting at-risk elementary students. In 2003, she was given the “Emerging String Teacher of the Year” award for the state of Nevada from the American String Teachers' Association. She said goodbye to Nevada in the summer of 2003 with a joint performance between her students and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Las Vegas. Ms. Alissa then moved to Albuquerque to pursue graduate work at UNM with Suzuki teacher trainer Susan Kempter. In her spare time, Ms. Alissa attends concerts, reads, hikes and plays with her two dogs: Bitina and Stitch!
Ms. Leslie (Leslie Alperin)
String Teacher
lalperin@tmesnm.com
Bio:
Leslie Alperin has been working with young musicians ever since graduating from the University of Michigan in 1971. She began her professional life in the elementary school classroom, teaching 2 nd through 6 th graders for ten years in Connecticut , California , and Alaska . In 1981 she was hired to direct orchestra programs in grades 4-12, and to develop a strings program for two new elementary schools. During her eight years in Alaska , Ms Alperin also conducted the North Star Strings community orchestra and performed with the Fairbanks Symphony, the Arctic Chamber Orchestra, and the Aurora String Quartet. She enjoyed traveling with her cello to remote villages by riverboat, ‘bush' plane, and dogsled! After moving to North Carolina in 1988, Leslie continued to teach private cello and ensembles for children and adults. Her student cello choir “The Red Hot 'Celli Peppers” became a local favorite, giving concerts throughout the state. Ms Alperin was a guest artist and music specialist in many schools, and performed with numerous chamber and orchestral ensembles in the Piedmont area. In addition to her education degree, she has extensive Suzuki, Orff, and ECMMA training and certification. For fifteen years she taught early-childhood music classes in her studio, seeing nearly 100 children each week. Ms Alperin directed the Piedmont Youth Orchestra from 1995-2010, offering a program with a serious attention to individual learning, personal commitment, and quality performance. Her training in education and music, and her decades of experience with groups of all ages, have taught her that students will rise to exceptional levels through encouragement, example, and a love of music. It is her desire that students find joy in music-making, excitement in learning, and fulfillment in meeting the musical and personal challenges that ensemble participation offers. Many of Ms Alperin's cello students have attended music conservatories; but more importantly, all of her students continue to enjoy music, and have developed the lifelong skills to make musical friends wherever they go. Leslie greatly enjoys teaching, hiking, bicycling, reading, singing, and cooking. And she loves to get together with any or all of her three grown children whenever possible!
