January-February Classroom Update:
We would like to thank all the parents who participated in the Student Lead Conferences for their efforts. We feel these conferences were very successful and helpful for the students, parents and teachers alike. Your ongoing support and involvement is much appreciated!
Donations
Many parents may already know of the Pennies for Peace drive we are currently participating in. Every penny brought in by our students helps in a tremendous way, so please encourage them to bring in whatever pennies they can find!
As a class, we are very concerned with playing our part in the relief effort for Haiti. We have received generous donations already, but there is a lot of work to be done, and a lot of families still in need of help. All donations we receive go directly to the International Red Cross. If you can help, we strongly encourage that you do, through our school or by other methods.
Open House
Plans for an Open House day are in the works! We are very excited by the idea of having you explore and see first-hand what is going on in our school. There will be a Meet TMES meeting on February 20th. More information will be sent home in the upcoming weeks about it, so keep an eye out.
Nate the Great and Traveling Trunks
On Tuesday, February 2nd, the 6-9 grade level will be going on a field trip to see a performance of Nate the Great! The performance is based on the children books of the same name. The trip is already paid for with the money from our
fall field trip that was cancelled due to bad weather. It is scheduled for noon. Any parents who already paid to be chaperones are still invited to do so, if you are still available.
Also, Traveling Trunks will be coming to our classroom on February 8th! It will be a fun day of crafts and learning about the history of New Mexico and its cultures.
Upcoming Education
Topics of learning for the new year are geometry, life sciences (botany and zoology) and writing skills. Also, the weekly work plans will now include a Grammar Lesson box, in addition to the Reading Group and Language boxes.
A Few Reminders:
Showing up to school on time is very important! Students who are even 5-15 minutes late miss the most important Circle Meeting of the day. In this meeting we cover the general plan for the day, any topics and concerns, and when things will and will not be available. Missing this valuable information adds confusion and disturbance to the classroom. Any students not in class by 9:00 will be marked as absent, without exception. It’s recommended students show up between 8:30 and 8:45 am so they can start working on their morning warm-ups such as handwriting and journal in a calm and peaceful environment.
Cloth napkins and silverware are also still a must for lunches. Students who do not bring their own supplies from home use disposable napkins and plastic ware that damage the environment. We encourage you to pack your child’s lunch together!
Also, communication folders are the most effective way to send home any information from our classroom or the school. It is also a great way to send home excellent student work which they are proud of! In order to do this, we need the folders to be brought back to school every day. We encourage you to talk with your children about their day, ask to see their folders, and discuss what’s in it!
All the Best!!
